"Katharina die Letzte" is the work of Hermann Kosterlitz, who later became very well known in Hollywood under the name of Henry Koster. This film is a very fine example of his early work in Austria. The story concerns a young upper-class guy (Hans Holt) who wants to marry an equally upper-class lady. Her father objects, though, and so he befriends a lowly servant (Franziska Gaal) of the girl's family in order to contact his fiancée. But as these things go, the illiterate servant girl proves to be the real thing….
One of the imdb reviewers writes: "I think this is among the most moving films I've ever seen. I really sat in front of the TV sniffing and sobbing." Well, I'm a little bit more hard-boiled, but I have to say that this is a wonderful romantic comedy featuring an outstanding performance by Franziska Gaal in the title role; charming, vulnerable, simply lovely. Holt isn't bad either, and his role might have been an ideal vehicle for either Willy Fritsch or Adolf Wohlbrück (he looks more like the latter, but plays more like the first…). We also have some songs here, and pretty good ones, and a small appearance by the legendary Comedian Harmonists. I don't have to say more; you probably guessed by now that I love this film.
The quality of the recording could be better, though. The DVDR I originally received - clearly video-sourced and probably not first-generation - of this Austrian TV broadcast was in the NTSC format. So I IVTC'd it, applied greyscale, and gave it a rather healthy bitrate, but it does look too dark, rather soft and 'thick' nevertheless; I do suppose, however, that the print used was far from ideal in the first place. I'd welcome a PAL-sourced DVDR upgrade of this in any case; but it seems that this isn't a film that's too widely available.
