Sinopsis: The film opens with a Ravi Varma like tableau showing King Harishchandra, his wife Taramati and his young son. The king is teaching his son archery. They go on a hunt. The king enters an area controlled by the Sage Vishwamitra. Three furies appear before the king caught in flames. The king tries to rescue them. These fairies try to seduce the king into renouncing his kingdom for his love of truth. The king endures much hardship including being banished from his kingdom before a god appears to reassure everyone that the whole narrative was merely a test of the king's integrity.

Para curiosos y cinéfilos perseguidores de rarezas, traigo el que es considerado el primer largometraje de la historia del cine indio. La copia es muy mala, pero es lo que hay. Tiene intertítulos en el idioma original y en inglés. La encontré en thepiratebay.

- “…El auténtico padre del cine indio es Dhundiraj Govind Phalke. Familiarizado con el cine durante sus viajes por Europa, de donde importó consigo el material necesario para abordar la realización, Phalke rodó en 1913 el que se considera unánimemente el primer filme indio de la historia, Raja Harishchandra [El rey Harishchandra]. Su gran éxito animó a Phalke a seguir por esa vía, produciendo y dirigiendo un buen número de filmes históricos y mitológicos –su especialidad– hasta que la llegada del sonoro le apartara prácticamente de la realización. […] En cierto sentido, el nacimiento de star system indio se produjo con la realización de Raja Harishchandra. A falta de cualquier infraestructura, Phalke no sólo debió comprar en Europa su equipo, sino reclutar por doquier a sus improvisados actores: Salunka, joven cocinera empleada a la sazón en un restaurante, devino así la protagonista de este célebre filme mitológico y se convirtió al tiempo en la primera gran estrella del cine indio”.
