ARGUMENTO: At a festival, a chorus of women sing and dance as two stories unfold. In a village, a young women with a jealous husband gives him something to be jealous about when his younger brother comes for a visit. In a coastal city, Mrs. Congas runs a fish-drying business. She wants a less smelly job, so she seeks a loan to open a restaurant. When she's turned down, two of her daughters visit the banker and bat their eyes; the loan comes through. But her troubles aren't over: every male relative and tribal cousin shows up, praising her lazy husband and expecting money, food, and help.
Structured around the rhythm of a dance, filmmaker Désiré Ecaré weaves a rich tapestry of textures and cadences of life in the Ivory Coast in his film Faces of Women. This film displays in a comedy of manners the changing roles of women in West Africa. Politically and stylistically adventurous, this two-part film explores the links between feminism, economics and tradition in modern day Africa, ironically pointing out similar patterns in the strategies adopted by women in patriarchal societies.
A wonderfully unpredictable and lively triptych on the financial, sexual and emotional emancipation of African women, pieced together over twelve years by a film-maker who hasn't a single dull thought in his head. Traditional choruses and dances link the episodes and comment on the action, lending the film a structure that owes no debts to colonial models. The middle episode, about a woman who tires of her possessive husband and goes out to get herself a lover, is a real eye-opener: an extremely naked scene of seduction in and around a river lays a hundred puritan ghosts.

Se trata de dos fábulas unidas por un coro griego (en este caso marfileño) que canta y baila a lo largo del metraje. El primer sketch es el más largo y estilísticamente más interesante, de pocos diálogos, ambientación rural y que culmina con una larga escena erótica en el río. El segundo es de ambientación urbana y argumentalmente más incisivo, aunque sin resolución. Ambos reflejan el papel de la mujer marfileña en una sociedad cambiante.
