Sinopsis: Nishi (Beat Takeshi) es un policía que atraviesa malos momentos, encabezados por la muerte de su hija y por la enfermedad terminal que padece su mujer (Kayoko Kishimoto). A esto se le suma la invalidez de su compañero, recibida por un disparo durante una redada policial, que abandonado por su familia y al borde del suicidio, supera su estado con la ayuda de Nishi y la pintura. Deprimido, Nishi se retira de la policía para hacerle pasar felizmente a su mujer sus escasos últimos días de vida.
Synopsis: Detective Nishi has just lost his infant daughter and is about to lose his wife to a fatal illness. He is advised by the doctors to take her home so she can die in peace. Nishi also finds out his partner Horibe has been seriously wounded and may be confined to a wheelchair. Nishi visits Horibe who says that he would like to take up painting but cannot afford the hobby. Nishi borrows money from the yakuza to supply his friend with paint and to support a young policeman's widow whose husband was killed during an arrest. Haunted by the death surrounding him, Nishi carries out a plan to right the wrongs in his life. Having quit the police force, Nishi buys an old taxi, repaints it to resemble a police cruiser, and then single-handedly robs a bank. He promptly uses the money to repay the yakuza and to take his dying wife on a trip that will give her a taste of happiness.
"Without doubt Kitano's finest film to date, Hana-Bi surpasses almost all of Japanese cinema by its sheer depth and subtlety. Kitano's masterpiece is filled with fine performances, expertly framed shots, and a strongly emotional score (once again composed by the wonderful Joe Hisaishi). As with Kitano's earlier films (Sonatine, Boiling Point, and Violent Cop) the cold brutality of violence is present, however, in Hana-Bi (literally translated as Fireworks - however the two word combination of Hana "Flower" and Bi "Fire" is far more suited) the violence is infused with an unprecedented emotional core that evokes one of the most powerful experiences in cinema." jpreview.com
