Sinopsis
La historia se centra en un joven, que es un fracasado y un cobarde; una joven, acostumbrada a la dura vida en la orilla del río; y un niño, cuyos padres murieron en el río. Con el fin de "huir del barro," el joven convence a la chica para ir a la ciudad, llevando al niño con ellos. Allí se reunirán con el bruto, que les ofrece refugio sólo porque le gusta la chica. Josef von Sternberg's much-discussed picture, "The Salvation Hunters," deals with mud, indolence and depravity, with a ray of sunshine thrown in at the end. He calls it a thought—photographing a thought—and in the introductory chapters aboard a dredge he succeeds cleverly in creating an interest which is mildly mindful of Eugene O'Neill's "Anna Christie." But this current effort possesses little action and the chief characters are an intensely lethargic lot. The producer has a weakness for posing his players and overemphasizing certain rather amateurish points.

There was infinitely more romance concerned with the making of this picture than in the final result. It is said to have cost an absurdly small sum. The picture was eventually shown to Charles Chaplin, Douglas Fairbanks and Mary Pickford, who were so agitated with enthusiasm that they bought an interest in the film for much more than the whole effort had cost. Possibly the simplicity of this production is what stirred them—mud and inertia carrying an appeal much stronger than jewels and jazz vivacity.

However, despite the fact that Mr. von Sternberg wanted to stretch his thought to six reels, he would have strengthened his production materially by picturing natural movements with his characters and eliminating some of the symbolic touches.

George K. Arthur impersonates the Boy, a sluggish dreamer with pure thoughts. Mr. Arthur's performance in some of the sequences is quite interesting, but he does look rather well nourished to be suffering from the pangs of hunger. His sloth is abominably exasperating, as one would expect any youth with health and strength to do more than he does to find work. In one scene he comes to the comfortless room with a stick of chewing gum, which he shares with the Girl and the Child. He wanders around with his hands dug deep into his trousers pockets, searching for work, often signs confronting him that no help is wanted. After a spiritless attempt to obtain employment he returns to the room in the horrible house, and lolis on a plush sofa, with the Girl and the Child beside him. They think and moan.

At the outset Mr. von Sternberg pictures a cat eating refuse, seagulls as scavengers, and a bit of beach strewn with wreckage. Then there are the excellent scenes aboard the dredge with the great iron shovel going about its work of gnawing up the mud, which the producer points out fills in as quickly as it is dug out. The Boy wanders on to the dredge to see the Girl, who is smoking a cigarette the Brute gave to her. With the even swing of a pendulum the great shovel is seen pulling forth muck and water and with a sort of yawn letting it out into the dredge. The Child's parents have been victims of this great iron implement, and he lives aboard the dredge. The Brute comes across the Child, who is disobedient. We have seen a good many brutes, but have yet to see one who wanted to hold a child about six up to the side of a barge and start to strike him with a gnarled fist.

When the Boy perceives the Brute's action he stands aghast. We are told the Boy is a coward. He starts and stops, and finally goes to the rescue of the boy, who one thinks is about half killed by the time the rescuer reaches that end of the craft.

The shovel spills its slime and muck over the Brute, and the Boy and the Child make their escape, the Girl accompanying them. They encounter a lascivious beast, known as the Man, who smiles in oily and calculating fashion upon the Girl. He thinks her more attractive than the Woman, and invites the trio to take shelter in one of his rooms. There ensues a number of situations that are wearying. The players move their heads very slowly when talking to one another, and the Man usually takes up a pose under a pair of horns, giving him a diabolical aspect.

It is the thrashing of the Man by the Boy that eventually changes the Boy, and also the Girl. She gains confidence in him and he feels himself no longer a coward or a drone. The fight between the two men is well done until the last round, when, after the Boy is shown to be exhausted and dizzy, he picks up the Man and pitches him over the embankment into the automobile. Quite an effort!

Mr. von Sternberg has pictured the Boy's day dream in an interesting and exotic fashion. It occurs while the Boy is taking his usual rest on the plush sofa.

This is an effort thought to be art because it is simple. It turns about to be a fair study with amateurish direction in many spots, and is quite dubious as an entertainment.

Georgia Hale, except for the timed movements in so many of the sequences, is singularly fine in her portrayal of the Girl. Bruce Guerin is capital as the Child. Otto Matiesen is a little too earnest and slow as the Man. NYTimes February 2, 1925

Josef von Sternbergs Debütfilm gilt als einer der ersten amerikanischen Independent-Produktionen überhaupt. Der Film entstand mit kleinem Budget in San Pedro und Los Angeles. Als Charles Chaplin und Douglas Fairbanks den Film sahen, waren sie so begeistert, dass sie Sternberg bei United Artists unter Vertrag nahmen und den Film in ihren Verleih nahmen. Chaplin engagierte die Hauptdarstellerin Georgia Hale gleich für seinen nächsten Film „The Gold Rush“ (1925). Dabei ist dieser Film alles andere als leichte Kost.
Sternberg bewegt sich bei seinem Debütfilm noch in bester europäischer Avantgardetradition. Ihn interessiert weniger, eine emotional aufwühlende Geschichte zu erzählen, als Zustände zu zeigen: Zustände der Fremdheit in einem unwirtlichen Land, des Wartens und des Fatalismus. Seine Protagonisten sind namenlose Typen auf der Suche nach ihrem Glück: tragikomische Figuren, nicht unähnlich den Figuren von Maxim Gorkis Stück „Kinder der Sonne“, auf das der Film mehrfach anspielt.
Erst als sie ihr Schicksal selbst in die Hand nehmen, entwickeln sie sich zu individuellen Charakteren. Erlösung vom alten Ego der Gleichgültigkeit und Unterwürfigkeit, das ist die Rettung der "Heilssucher“. Josef von Sternberg, als Jonas Sternberg 1894 in Wien geboren, verbrachte seine Kindheit in Österreich und den USA und wurde mit 15 amerikanischer Staatsbürger. Durch erste Jobs als Filmcutter, Drehbuchautor und Regieassistent kam er nach Hollywood. Nach seinem erfolgreichen „The Salvation Hunters“ kam er ab 1927 bei Paramount unter Vertrag und begründete mit „Underworld“ das Genre des Gangsterfilms.

Drei Heimatlose, ein junger Mann, seine Geliebte und ein Kind, leben auf einem Baggerschiff, dessen Besitzer der jungen Frau nachstellt. Alle drei versuchen, sich den Angriffen der Umwelt zu entziehen, und flüchten in die Stadt, wo das Paar an einen brutalen Zuhälter gerät. Am Ende findet es zu sich selbst, indem es seine Lethargie überwindet und aus den bedrückenden Verhältnissen ausbricht. Der erste, noch mit kleinem Budget ausgestattete Erfolgsfilm von Sternberg. Entstanden zwischen den Lehmhütten von San Pedro in Kalifornien, ist dieser Stummfilm neben Anatahan" (1953) das einzige Werk, das er in völliger künstlerischer Freiheit realisieren konnte."

Es ist der erste abendfüllende Spielfilm des damals ganz am Anfang seiner Karriere stehenden und noch völlig unbekannten Regisseurs. Zuvor hatte Josef von Sternberg in Hollywood in einem Filmkopierwerk und als Regieassistent gearbeitet. "The Salvation Hunters" ist auch der einzige Film, den er völlig unabhängig – mit einem schmalen Budget, fernab von Studios, Produzenten und Stars – drehen konnte. Der Streifen gilt als erster US-amerikanischer Independent-Film überhaupt. Mit diesem Werk wollte der damals einunddreißigjährige Josef von Sternberg auf die vorherrschende Hollywood-Ästhetik der Zwanzigerjahre reagieren, indem er sich gegen die Stars und ihr übertriebenes Gebärdenspiel wandte.
"The Salvation Hunters" wurde nach der Premiere als experimenteller Film begrüßt, als ein Kunstwerk, in dem zum ersten Mal die bemerkenswerte Arbeit des Regisseurs mit Raum und Licht auffällt. Josef von Sternberg zählte Charles Chaplin und Douglas Fairbanks zu seinen Bewunderern.

Man sollte sich "The Salvation Hunters" allein schon wegen seines maßlosen Ehrgeizes ansehen, beanspruchte der Film doch, die Mängel des Kinos nicht nur durch eine verstärkte Beschäftigung mit dem Körper, sondern auch mit dem Geist wettzumachen.
Von Sternberg wollte mit seinem Film eine Botschaft vermitteln und nichts Geringeres als beispielsweise dieBewegung eines Gedankens in Kinobilder umsetzen. Das Ergebnis ist eine Reflexion über den Menschen, der sein Schicksal in die Hand nehmen muss, um sich aus seinem Sklavendasein zu lösen. "The Salvation Hunters" ist keine philosophische Darlegung und auch keine bloße naturalistische Fabel, sondern eine Bildsinfonie, in der Josef von Sternberg Materie und Licht formt. Der Regisseur erzählt die Geschichte eines jungen Paares, das sich aus einfachsten Verhältnissen emporarbeiten will und dabei, wie der Titel es andeutet, nach Erlösung sucht.
Die Sinnlichkeit und Erotik, die einige Jahre später in Josef von Sternbergs Klassikern mit Marlene Dietrich triumphieren sollten, sind in diesem Debütfilm bereits überall spürbar und machten das Gesellenstück sogleich zum Meisterwerk.
ARTE zeigt den Film in einer von der UCLA (School of Theater, Film and Television) und dem Österreichischen Filmmuseum wunderbar restaurierten Fassung. Bei dieser Gelegenheit vergaben ARTE/ZDF und das Wiener Konzerthaus einen Kompositionsauftrag zur Begleitung des Stummfilms an den großen Jazzpianisten Brad Mehldau. Die Welturaufführung fand Anfang Oktober in Wien statt.
