This film, based on a short story of the same title by the leftist writer Rou Shi is one of the true classics of Chinese cinema both visually, with its painterly compositions, and thematically, with its posing moral dilemmas for the central characters. A focus on individual emotions and the positive representation of intellectuals were unusual aspects of mainland films of the 1950s and 60s. Early Spring was hugely popular with local audiences on its release in 1964. But it was attacked viciously by the CCP authorities and in the press. In fact, Jay Leyda was very concerned that the "immediate and bitter" attacks on the film could ruin the career of director Xie. They didn't.
