TÍTULO: Avanti popolo
AÑO: 1986
PAÍS: Israel
IDIOMA: Árabe, hebreo, inglés
DIRECTOR: Rafi Bukai
INTÉRPRETES: Salim Dau (Haled el Asmar), Suhel Haddad (Gassan Hamada), Tuvia Gelber (David Pozner), Danny Segev (Yacaov Hirsh), Dani Roth (Dani Sela)
ARGUMENTO: June 11th 1967. Two Egyptian soldiers (an actor and a peasant in civilian life) stranded in the Sinai Desert during the final hours of the Six Day War. The two decide to make a private retreat back across the Suez Canal. On the way they have a string of surrealistic encounters – a dead U.N. soldier, an English TV crew, a group of confused Israeli soldiers, and lots of alcohol...
Delirious from thirst and later from their first taste of liquor, the two protagonists fall into situations ranging from the comic to the surreal. (At one point, the Arab Shakespearean plays Shylock to an audience of Israeli soldiers: "Has not a Jew eyes, emotions, senses? Do we not bleed?") Skewering the stupidity and wanton destructiveness of war, AVANTI was released in 1986, after the Israeli War in Lebanon, and generated considerable controversy as well as critical acclaim. ("Avanti Popolo" is an Italian Communist marching song.)
Israel's 1986 Oscar entry for Best Foreign Film set off a political furor when Cabinet Minister Ariel Sharon railed against it in the Knesset, calling it self-destructive. Winner of Golden Leopard in Locarno festival, started as a 16mm graduation film of a young student, Rafi Bukai, and based on a true story. the stellar director made just one more film, and sadly passed away from cancer when he's only 46.
Siguiente entrega de la serie "peticiones del predicador para traer de Karagarga"The film in effect originated as a kind of hallucination of two people walking in the desert, and then came a writing process in which those two people turned into soldiers, and then into Egyptian soldiers, and after that during the Six-Day War. In effect, I wrote most of the film in connection to the first Lebanon war.
I don't know any Egyptian soldiers, I wasn't interested in the character of an Egyptian soldier, I constructed it based on absolute human values, and it made no difference to me whether the people were Egyptian, French or Burmese. It was important to me that they be human beings first of all.
