  La película describe cuatro horas en la vida de dos jóvenes indios americanos que dejaron la reserva en la que vivían para mudarse a Los Ángeles: Yvonne, una joven apache y su marido Homero, un Hualapi. La pareja está esperando un hijo y comparten un departamento de dos recámaras con un mexicano y cuatro amigos indios. Los hombres se reúnen por las noches para beber, jugar cartas, estar con chicas, a veces pelear y otras bailar. Yvonne, en cambio, va al cine sola, sale de compras y pasa el tiempo en casa de una amiga. Ambos escenarios construyen la confusa vida que viven los indios americanos atrapados entre la tradición y la vida moderna. (...)

  A veces, mucho más interesante que ciertas remasterizaciones de clásicos ultravistos, es el rescate de títulos olvidados o que tuvieron una difusión criminal que les negó —a veces por décadas— la merecida exposición.
  
  Así pasó con The Exiles (1961), verdadero documento de la era beat rodado en el centro de Los Angeles por Kent McKenzie, en los días en que ser un realizador indie en California era una idea de locos. La idea era registrar el rudo carrete nocturno de los jóvenes que acababan de abandonar las reservaciones indígenas para dirigirse a la metrópoli, pero en vez de obtener un rebelde sin causa indio, Mckenzie acabó con un producto muy distinto: el retrato de una ciudad que está en perpetuo flujo, construyéndose día a día sobre las cenizas de la anterior.

  Prácticamente todo lo que aparece en The Exiles, ya no existe. Dejó de ser hacer mucho tiempo: la agitada vida nocturna del downtown, el mix racial de la ciudad, las casas y callejones del fascinante —y desaparecido— barrio de Bunker Hill (que Robert Towne tuvo que reconstruir en Sudáfrica, para la filmación de Ask the dust (2006). Y eso que sólo estamos hablando de lo que se ve a primera vista.
  
  Como muy bien apunta el profesor Thom Andersen en su fascinante documental L.A. Plays Itself (2003), el gran valor de películas como The Exiles es su capacidad para dar vida a un Los Angeles que Hollywood jamás se dignó en captar, aunque lo tuviera en la cara. La vida de una ciudad donde la diferencia en el color de tu piel define cada paso que das o que vayas a dar.
  
  Por lo mismo no extraña que no hayan los cinéfilos internacionales de turno (Scorsese y su patota) brillaran por su ausencuia en el rescate de este humilde filme, sino que la producción del revival haya corrido por cuenta del afroamericano Charles Burnett, uno de los pocos maestros del cine norteamericano que todavía opera en términos humanos y no industriales.
  
  Raro el trayecto de The Exiles. La película fue rescatada del total olvido en 2004, cuando comenzó a aparecer en un puñado de festivales europeos y latinos (yo pude verla ese año en el Bafici, porque el propio Thom Andersen se encargó de traerla). En esos días se vendía a McKenzie como el Cassavetes de la costa oeste, básicamente porque su rodaje guarda muchos paralelos con el de Shadows. Pero mientras esta última sólo insinuaba un mundo insalvable de diferencias entre los negros y blancos de la posguerra, The Exiles anticipaba que el conflicto se volvería central durante la década que estaba recién comenzando, y que cualquier intento de marketearlo a lo “rebelde sin causa” y en technicolor sería pura glamorización.
  
  PD: No deja de ser una ironía que esta magnífica película estadounidense haya sido editada en DVD por el British Film Institute. Da que pensar.

  THE EXILES chronicles one night in the lives of young Native American men and women living in the Bunker Hill district of Los Angeles. Based entirely on interviews with the participants and their friends, the film follows a group of exiles — transplants from Southwest reservations — as they flirt, drink, party, fight, and dance.
  
  Filmmaker Kent Mackenzie first conceived of The Exiles during the making of his short film Bunker Hill (1956) while a student at the University of Southern California. In July 1957, Mackenzie began to hang around with some of the young Indians in downtown Los Angeles. After a couple of months, he broached the subject of making a film that would present a realistic portrayal of Indian life in the community.

  Mackenzie spent long hours making friends and earning the confidence of these Indians who finally agreed to re—enact a scenes from their lives for this picture. All of the actors, some of whom were recruited on the spur of the moment during the shooting, play themselves in the film.
  
  The Exiles was directed and photographed by a group of young filmmakers — Mackenzie's college mates, fellow employees, and friends holding down a variety of day-to-day jobs in the motion picture industry. Much of the picture was shot on "short ends," the leftovers of 1,000—foot rolls (varying from 100 to 300 feet of stock) discarded by major film producers.
  
  In collaboration with cinematographers John Morrill, Erik Daarstad, and Robert Kaufman, the shooting of The Exiles began in January 1958 and the first trial composite print was privately screened in April 1961. Premiering in the Venice Film Festival that year, the film received acclaim from many critics but tragically never found commercial distribution.
  
  It was Thom Andersen's compilation documentary Los Angeles Plays Itself which kicked off the rediscovery of this lost masterwork. Andersen contacted the daughters of Mackenzie to receive permission to use footage to illustrate the lost neighborhood of Bunker Hill. Although the original negative and fine—grain (interpositive) existed for the film, it was decided that a theatrical distribution of the film could put the materials at risk. So Milestone, in cooperation with USC's film archivist Valarie Schwan, brought the film to preservationist Ross Lipman and the UCLA Film & Television Archive.
  
  Milestone who distributed last year's critical and box office hit, Charles Burnett's Killer of Sheep, is releasing the restored version of The Exiles, premiering July 11th 2008 at the IFC center in New York.

Aunque el vídeo se extienda hasta 1:28:30, la película sólo dura 1:13:02. Eliminando estos 15 minutos sobrantes no se ganan más de 20 MB, por lo que he preferido dejarlo como está y no generar un archivo diferente.

Hay un ripio algo mejor en KG (993 MB) con un audiocomentario. También tienen el corto Bunker Hill (sin subs).
