SINOPSIS

Un matrimonio de comerciantes noruegos que vive en una recóndita zona habitada únicamente por lapones pierde a su hija camino a la iglesia para bautizarla. Aunque creen que ha perecido atrapada por los lobos, en realidad ha sido descubierta por un miembro del clan lapón más importante de la zona y posteriormente ha sido adoptada por el jefe del mismo, que la cuida como si fuera una hija propia. Pasa un año, y de visita al pueblo éste descubre quiénes son los verdaderos padres de la niña y, lleno de pesar, se la devuelve. Desgraciadamente, un tiempo después la peste asola el poblado y, ante la muerte de sus padres biológicos, la niña regresa con los lapones, que la crían hasta su edad adulta.

Laila crece y se convierte en una hermosa muchacha destinada a casarse con el otro hijo adoptivo del jefe del clan. Pero entonces ésta traba conocimiento con un joven comerciante noruego por el que se sentirá atraída.

Considerada una de las grandes películas del cine mudo noruego, Layla (1929) es una pequeña joya que, pese a su argumento quizá algo tópico a nuestros ojos actuales, se beneficia tanto del principal rasgo del cine escandinavo de la época (su forma de capturar esos impresionantes paisajes e integrarlos con los personajes) como de ese estilo tan típico de finales de la era del mudo, en que los cineastas llegaron a un punto de perfección a la hora de narrar sus historias con imágenes que hace que muchos lamentemos que el sonido no se demorara unos pocos años más.

In 2006 the Norwegian Film Institute restored this epic film from the Far
North. Laila is a film that truly deserves (re)discovery. In 2 hours and 45
minutes we experience all the special action and passion so characteristic
of late silent films.
The wealthy merchant Lind and his wife finally have their fervently longedfor
child, and have to make a long journey to have their baby daughter
christened, at the onset of the coldest depths of winter.On the way they are
attacked by wolves, and during the wild escape the baby falls out of the
sledge. Everybody believes that the child is lost, but the Lapp Jaampa finds
the child, and she is then brought up by the rich reindeer owner Aslag
Laagje. From here on the scene is set for great emotions,conflicts, and love,
framed by gorgeous natural scenery.
A Danish-German director, George Schnéevoigt, was hired to bring out all
the potential of the locations in the wilds of northern Norway. Schnéevoigt
was also a noted cinematographer, who had photographed four of Carl Th.
Dreyer’s films (Blade af Satans Bog/Leaves from Satan’s Book,shot 1919,
released 1921; Prästänkan/The Parson’s Widow, 1920; Der Var
Engang/Once Upon a Time, 1922; and Du Skal Aere Din Hustru/The
Master of the House, 1925). The idea of making Laila had come to
Schnéevoigt one year earlier, as he photographed Viddenes folk (People of
the Tundra, 1928, directed by Ragnar Westfelt), a similar film that starred
some of the same actors. Schnéevoigt went on to work successfully in the
talkies, and even made a Danish-Swedish sound remake of Laila in 1937.
Laila is one of those late Norwegian silents which for years has suffered
from being shown at the wrong speed.The main reason for this is that it
was shot at 16 fps and was later consequently shown at sound speed, 24
fps; thus the dramatic and emotional plot could easily seem comic and flat.
In this recent restoration the speed has been adjusted, so the film can be
projected at normal sound speed while maintaining its original natural pace
