Sinopsis: Una niña (Mui) llega a la ciudad para trabajar como sirvienta en una casa. La hija menor de esa familia tendría su edad, de no haber muerto años atrás. De la muerte el padre se siente culpable, lo que arruinó ese matrimonio. Este hombre escapa constantemente de casa con los ingresos de una pequeña merecería que sostiene la economía precaria del hogar. Mientras Mui trata de sobrepasar su carga de sirvienta, ella sufre las tormentas de la juventud de Tin, el hijo menor de la familia. Pero Mui mantiene una pasión secreta por Khuyén, un compositor joven, rico y soltero amigo de la casa que de vez en cuando visita la familia. Con su inocente juventud, Mui siente un espontáneo afecto por este joven. Diez años más tarde, esta joven sirvienta ha crecido, convirtiéndose en una mujer de belleza salvaje. "Watching it is like seeing a poem for the eyes." That's how Chicago Sun-Times
critic Roger Ebert described this exquisite, Oscar-nominated, French-Vietnamese
film from 1993, which begins in the 1950s and ends more than a decade later
during the early years of the Vietnam war. The story is set almost entirely in a
Saigon house where a 10-year-old orphan girl named Mui arrives to work as a
servant. As she grows into a beautiful young woman, Mui is quietly and carefully
observant of everything around her, from the scent of green papaya (hence the
title) to the relationship between her employers. The film takes its visual cues
from Mui's observations--it's a placid, soothing film that lingers over the
physical and emotional details of its setting and story.

What's really astonishing about this beautiful film is that director Anh Tran
Hung shot it entirely on a soundstage in Paris, but the sights and sounds are so
completely convincing that you'd swear the setting is an actual home in Saigon.
This remarkable craftsmanship remains invisible to the viewer, and the seductive
progression of the story unfolds with exacting visual precision. It's a film
about Mui's growth and development, but also about her benevolent effect on the
world around her. As such, it's a movie to savor like no other, life affirming

Muchas gracias por traerla, elguaxo! Y se agradecen esos subtítulos, davinci14...espero que sincronicen!
Recién hoy escuché por primera vez de este film (lo van a pasar este próximo viernes en un museo de Buenos Aires), y ahora tengo mucha curiosidad, asique pincho. Espero llegar a verla en la pantalla grande dentro de unos días, también.

Los subtítulos que ha puesto davinci14 sincronizan perfectamente después de añadir un delay (+) de 21,400 segundos con el Subtitle Workshop.

Synopsis: The interior life of a Vietnamese household in the 1950s, as seen through the eyes of a young servant girl, is explored in Tran Anh Hung's placid, but visually intoxicating tone poem, L'Odeur de la Papaye Verte. The film begins in 1951, when the beautiful and inquisitive 10-year-old peasant girl Mui (LU MAN SAN) is hired to work at the home of an affluent Saigon family. When the father absconds with the family's money, the tireless mother (Truong Thi Loc) is forced to support the family through the slim profits of her tiny fabric store. As the family struggles to make ends meet, Mui becomes attracted to a friend of the family, Khuyen (Vuong Hoa Hoi). The film then shifts to 1961, when the family is in desperate straits. The father has died, and Mui (TRAN NU YEN-KHE), now twenty years old, finds herself working in Khuyen's home. Khuyun has grown into an attractive, sophisticated French-speaking pianist, with his own expensive mistress. Mui serves him as she has served the family -- with perfection and silence. She also loves Khuyen is silence, and gradually Khuyen begins to take notice of Mui's love for him.

The scent of green papaya is a personal childhood memory. Everyone [in Vietnam] knew the gestures associated with the preparation of the papaya and, since the houses weren't soundproofed, you often heard it being prepared in the house next door. You knew the sound because the papaya is hollow and when you hit it (with a knife), it makes a very characteristic noise. The papaya was really a part of everyday Vietnamese life. Since the green papaya was a vegetable prepared by women, it immediately becomes a symbol of women's work. -- Tran Anh Hung
