Discovered by accident, a quiet meditative film, nice cinematography.
Synopsis (one of you guys will provide more on the background I'm sure): Alvaro lives alone on a remote island off the northern Argentinean coast, in a sort of estuary (where exactly?). He earns his money by fishing and reed- or wood-cutting. His only friend is an old man. In his free time he repairs old books, which he takes to town to the library. He participates in the local soccer games and occasionally has sex with other men, passing strangers.
The only connection to the mainland is little ferry "El León", owned by El Turu. El Turu is a deeply conservative man who resents the poor immigrants, called "missionarios", who have settled illegally on the island and are stealing wood from the forest. Once when drunk he insults Alvaro, calling him a fag in front of others. Later he tries to apologize and wants to befriend Alvaro, but it all ends in a catastrophe.
