The life of Lou Gehrig was a very memorable one, from his rise to fame to his famous farewell speech. And "Pride of the Yankees" has no trouble telling the story to us. With a few things slightly altered, the movie is pretty straightforward with Gehrig's life and doesn't try to go too far in moving us. It is an excellent film and is something that fans of Gehrig won't want to miss.
Cooper is excellent in the lead role. He just isn't playing Gehrig. He is Gehrig and it feels like we are watching the real Gehrig at times. His performance is touching and he gets the role of the baseball legend down perfectly, never disappointing us. He gives one of his most memorable performances, being able to carry the entire film. He never tries too hard yet doesn't try too little. This is a performance of his that I would definitely recommend you see.
The supporting cast is also solid. While the only other performances that really make this moving are from Teresa Wright and Elsa Jannsen, everyone does a good job making this movie so great. Even Babe Ruth is entertaining, as he seems to have fun just playing himself.
This is a sports classic and doesn't disappoint us in telling the life of a baseball legend and an American hero. It is a moving film that keeps you interested from start to finish. An excellent film on many levels, this is a film that is a must-see if you are a fan of Cooper (or Gehrig).
