Razzia in St. Pauli is an early German sound film (1932) of the end of the Weimar Republic era. It illustrates both the powerlessness of the ordinary worker as well as an intimate portrait of the joys and sorrows of a small group of people in the harbor section of Hamburg.
A social drama plays out in the harbor area of Hamburg: Ballhaus-Else, a prostitute, lives together with her boyfriend Leo, a peaceful bar musician, in St. Pauli. One day, Matrosen-Karl, a thief on the run, finds a hideout at Else's. She is fascinated by the man, who promises her a more exciting and better life. Together they want to leave Hamburg. Leo – who feels inferior to Karl – lets them go with a heavy heart. But then Karl gets arrested after a fight between the underworld and the police in the Kongo-Bar, and Else returns to Leo – and her hopeless everyday life.

The most important characteristic of this film is the use of local people, including those of somewhat gritty character, as extras playing parts that they actually lived at that time. Wikipedia

Razzia in St. Pauli is set along the docks of Hamburg harbor. A young woman moves in with her lover, the piano player in a cheap cabaret. As setback piles upon setback, the couple begins to wonder what they ever saw in each other. Seeking escape from the relationship, the girl enters into an affair with a two-bit sneak thief. The cops break up this little romance, whereupon the sadder-but-wiser heroine wearily returns to her pianist. Filmed on location, Razzia in St. Pauli was brought in on an amazingly low budget of $8000; needless to say, it made back its cost.

Lubitsch quote: [...] and as the crown jewel of my Weimar collection I release the famous Razzia in St.Pauli to the public, I hope subs will follow fast though there e.g. all the writings in the pub that are impossible to translate properly. The print quality is quite good despite the greenish tinge. The story oozes Hamburg atmosphere, a small-time gangster escapes into the room of a prostitute and dreams of escaping with her. Her boyfriend, a piano player, swallows his disappointment, but they all say goodbye to each other in a joint while the police still hunts the criminal. Anyway no story description can really nail the location feeling of this film in its first half and the brooding atmosphere of the second half. The fact that leading lady Gina Falckenberg looks like Gene Tierney and radiates a world weary sexiness doesn't hurt either.

Werner Hochbaum bietet in Die ewige Maske alle technischen Möglichkeiten auf - Montagen, Bauten, Kamera- und Kopiertricks um die komplexen Beziehungen zwischen Leben und Tod zu visualisieren. Das Filmarchiv Austria hat diesen Hochbaum-Klassiker neu umkopiert. Somit liegt dieser wichtige Film erstmals seit Jahren wieder in guter Qualität vor.

Leider nicht als Rip. It's his best film.

Es ist wirklich schade, dass 'Die ewige Maske' nicht in guter Qualität auf zu treiben ist.
Filmarchiv.at hat den Film restauriert, aber scheint ihn, außer in einigen Kinoaufführungen, zu verstecken.
Auch 'Razzia in St. Pauli' soll restauriert worden sein. Den haben sie wenigstens im MoMa in NY gezeigt. Aber mal eine DVD raus zu geben, kommt niemanden in den Sinn.
Wenn ich da an die USA denke mit WAC und anderen collections, dann kann ich nur neidisch werden.
Die Murnau-Stiftung oder das deutsche Filminstitut (die sind noch nicht mal in der Lage ihren Bestand an Filmplakaten der Öffentlichkeit zugänglich zu machen) sitzen auf ihren Archiven voller sehenswerter Filmen und fast nichts passiert.
