Tommaso quote: Almost twenty years after Ludwig Berger's "Walzerkrieg" (link), Wohlbrück again plays waltz composer Johann Strauss in this film by Emile Edwin Reinert. Although the film starts with a brief modern day sequence, the major part is a loving recreation of the mid 19th century world of Austria. This is not a very plot-driven film, but it shows us important moments in Strauss' career: his composition of a new form of waltz which initially disturbs his audience; his love affair with the girl Millie (Marte Harell) for whom he leaves his wife and family; finally his jealousy of his son, whose success eclipses his own. A quite beautiful film: fluid camerawork, exquisite lighting, slightly Ophulsian perhaps, though mostly reminiscent of some of Willi Forst's films from the 30s in my view. Taken from a DVDR of a recent TV broadcast. Print is fine, though slightly soft in places. In German WITHOUT SUBS.
