Scenario by Colette: A young girl from the country makes a career as showgirl and is involved in some opium traffic. Fantastic cinematography, great backstage scenes, you forget all about the low rip quality watching this.

This is from the same print but a superior image version to the earlier rip, running 1.11.38 (including the Rene Chateau logo) and like that one it sustains a number of small censorship cuts made of god knows what material during the climactic central Theatre episode. We are left however with one characteristcally Ophulsian shot, in a diagonal/vertical chiaroscuro of four beauties draped along a staircase with bared breasts:
The quality is certainly quite viewable but like all of Max' prewar French films the title would benefit from a restoration. The abrupt dismissal of these films as "minor" does them a great disservice and ignores the degree to which Ophuls' skills were in full flower from the beginning of his career with Liebelei and La Signora di Tutti. I think the meeting of Max and Colette is an extremely felicitous one - Max's regular immersion in the shaping of the screenplays and the decoupage and performance is evident here, as the potentially fatal "charm" of Colette that becomes so mismanged into cuteness for instance in Gigi is shaded and tempered with characters like Gina Manes' coke dealer, and the fabulously named Lutuf-Allah in the gold suit with the python! ...
