J. Lee Thompson is not particularly highly thought of today, having finished his directing career with a string of violent and often routine Charles Bronson actioners. However, there was a time when he was regarded as the most talented young director working in Britain. His films - the noirish Yield to the Night, the harrowing Woman in a Dressing Gown, the rousing adventure spectacular North-West Frontier, the wartime thriller Ice Cold in Alex, and Hayley Mills' stunning debut Tiger Bay - were almost universally admired (Jean-Luc Godard of the Cahiers being a notable exception). Then, of course, Hollywood beckoned and swallowed up J. Lee Thompson. Yet he returned to Europe a few more times, and in 1965 he made this brilliantly off-beat and twisting suspenser which perhaps Hitchcock would not have disowned. The film boasts an unusual and highly effective international cast and terrific black and white cinematography which can be appreciated even in this pan-and-scan version. The plot of the original novel was somewhat simplified - the murderous contraption of the finale was not in the book, I am happy to say, - but somehow everything still works. The many unexpected twists are genuinely exciting, and the psychological complexities of the situation are resolved rather cleverly. A most rewarding rarity for those in the mood - on a par with, say, Preminger's late masterpiece Bunny Lake Is Missing.
