Five young boys take off in a lighter-than-air machine from the Centenary Exposition in Prague. As the adult world races to copy the invention for their own evil purposes, the boys land on an uncharted island. The five boys survive against pirates, Captain Nemo, and the elements of nature in this engaging adventure story from Jules Verne.

This film is an absolute joy to watch. Of the three Zeman films I’ve seen, this is my favorite (the others are On The Comet and The Jester’s Tale). Not easy to find, but sometimes you can get lucky on ebay and pick up one like mine with a german sound track. It hardly matters... the film is so visual that the dialog isn’t necessary.
The boundless manic energy of a Chaplin film and wacky, totally cool flying machines of every description (one cobbled together by a bunch of kids from the debris of a wrecked dirigible) make it a pleasure from beginning to end. Zeman seems to be obsessed with early flight and with the fantasy tales of Jules Verne (always fun stuff). There is an appearance by Captain Nemo, sporting a flowing white beard. I thought the exterior appearance of the Nautilus was a bit sub par (it looks like a tin can with a conning tower on it) but the interior scenes are wondrous.
Zeman is a magician with celluloid, like Melies. Trick film techniques abound, including a crazy car with horse legs that walks down the street. He did some really bizarre things with color in this one. sometimes it seems to be in black and white, but generally there is an area that is flooded with a single color, or maye a few areas each wirth its own color. He’s so inventive with it, it keeps you guessing and always brings a smile. -Mike Brent
