Argumento:
Un grupo de renegados son reclutados por un estirado oficial "yankie" para recuperar una partida de armas robadas por unos rebeldes sudistas (comandados por un general totalmente demente) que se encuentran acantonados en medio del desierto en un campamento presidido por una enorme mansión sureña a medio construir.

- A stolen shipment of repeater rifles forces an unlikely - and severely tested - alliance between a Yankee Captain (Stuart Whitman), his black sergeant (Jim Brown, in his first film), an Indian-hating Rebel (Richard Boone), and a Mexican killer (Tony Franciosa). Their common foe: a megalomaniac Southern Colonel (Edmond O'Brien) who plans to revive the Civil War and strike back at the Union by arming the Apaches.
With Westerns at their all-time high in the early 1960's, director Gordon Douglas' Rio Conchos provided in 1964 much of the same story as the John Wayne film The Comancheros just a few years earlier. But despite the common threads in character stereotypes and plotline progressions, Rio Conchos examined the same genre through a much cloudier lens - that of the Vietnam War. While it shares the earlier film's taste for the picaresque, this version is in far darker register: Gordon Douglas directs with a blistering vehemence Michael Curtiz never dreamed of. It begins with the massacre of an Indian burial party, and ends with an extraordinarily baroque conflagration: a voyage from dust to ashes only one of the men will survive. This is Apocalypse Now on horses.
